Yoga & Tai Chi - feet

Expert: Daljit Kaur - 12/23/2008

Question
Hello Daljit: I am a beginner yoga person. Trying to read books and videos. I notice my feet go out at an angle as i walk. Are there poses that promote proper foot posture?
thank you

Answer
Maybe your peculiar angle of feet as you walk is due to incorrect posture. (If you feel discomfort, contact your doctor)

Maintain an erect and balanced posture while sitting, standing or walking. Idea is to hold an erect posture without introducing stiffness in the body. Incorrect posture can be corrected by you after identifying the defect and consciously trying to correct it.

The asanas which can help you with your postures are as follows:

Standing Poses
--------------
Kona asana, Tadasana

Supine Poses
------------
Halasana (Plough Pose)

Prone Poses
-----------
Bhujang Asana ( Cobra Pose), Dhanur asana ( Bow Pose),

Sitting Poses
-------------
Ardha Matsyendra Asana (Half Spinal Twist Pose), Ushtrasana (Camel Pose), Janushirasana

Try these tips for correct standing posture

Back should be straight (not stiff). Keep your body balanced, with least effort. Back of head should be inline with your spine, shoulders relaxed, inline with the ears.  Stand with your back to a wall and you can make out any improvement required in your posture.

Legs should be straight without bending the knees. Feet should be parted so as to stand comfortably. Your weight should be distributed evenly on both your feet, and also evenly spread out on each feet.

Correct posture requires conscious effort and is achievable over a period of time. Yoga practice will help you in correcting your posture.

Hope it helps.

Daljit
