Awards and Honors Placed third in the "Kundalini Yoga Olympics" overall and won 3 out of 5 events. Note: Yoga is not about competition but this was a special event.
Question QUESTION: I would like to know whether there are any specific aasans or pranayams that can help reduce cholestrol. I have been following a strict diet check with low fat, high fibre. I do not smoke or drink. I am quite regular in my exercises. yoga asanas and pranayams.
ANSWER: I teach Kundalini Yoga, which is a more aerobic yoga. There are lots of exercises in KY that help in cholesterol because they are aerobic. You need exercises that make you sweat. Exercises like breath of fire would help. I would suggest going to a KY yoga class. Here is one site.

QUESTION: I am sorry I did not mention my age in the last question. I am presently 60 yrs old so going in for aerobic yoga/ workout may not be my cup of tea now.In case you can suggestsome thing it will be fine. In case you feel you can suggest something could you pass this question to one of the other experts.
Answer First of all, you are not that old. I will be 60 in 4 1/2 months.
I would still go to a Kundalini Yoga class. A good teacher will encourage you to go at your own rate. Yoga is not a competition but you just try to do a little better each time. Challenge yourself a little and do the best you can do. I just saw a PBS special on NOVA last week. It had 12 sedentary people who decided to do the Boston Marathon. They all had trouble at first. They mentioned that the main benefit was that it cleaned out the arteries. All the people did it except one who had an injury.
If you want to do some exercises, my teacher, Yogi Bhajan, a Yoga Master, suggested walking for 5 miles a day. This means walking very fast and bringing your arms up parallel to the ground when the arm goes BOTH forward and back. You can do a mantra with every step. There are KY exercises such as leg raises; yogic situp where one goes from prone position, sits up and stretches to legs on floor and keep doing this for 3 minutes; Breath of Fire as I said before. There are others but you would be best served by going to a yoga class since the others are too complicated to explain here.
