Experience
Experience in the area: I have been breeding Yorkshire Terriers for over 20 years. I have had experience with c-sections, how to revive dead puppies, handling birthing complications and what you should and should not do when breeding. Publications: I have written a book entitled "Yorkshire Terriers - A Common Sense Guide To Breeding and Everything Else". The book is available on my website, www.petremembrances.com/Yorkie%20Advise.html as a downloadable PDF
Education/Credentials: My experience with breeding Yorkshire Terriers and having them as pets for over 20 years has taught me a lot. The mistakes I have made can be put to good use because I can pass the information on to others and help them not to make the same mistakes.
Question Hey, my grandma has a male yorkie and he is house trained but he "marks his territory" all over the house. We dont want to neuter him b/c he will be used for breeding. He weighs about 9lbs and our female is about 5 1/2lbs. Does he weigh too much for her? Our male's dad was small so we thought he might produce small puppies. Please help... thanks
Answer Will,
Under no circumstances should you let your male breed with your female. The usual weight ratio is a 2.5 to 3 pound male to a 5 to 6 pound female. To breed her with a male that is the same size as her or larger is to risk disastrous consequences during the birthing process. The puppies would be too large for her to deliver and the risk of complications is great. I urge you to do as much research about breeding your female as possible before you actually do breed her. There is a wealth of information on this website which you can access just by going through past questions and answers in this category.
As far as your male marking his territory, getting him fixed will not stop that. Most people think that getting a male neutered will make him stop acting like a male but that is not the case. If you think about it in human terms, when a man has a vasectomy does he stop having the urge to have sex? Does he stop getting aroused by females? Of course not. The same is true of male dogs. While the urge to run off may lessen the need to mark their territory does not go away. Having them neutered only prevents them from being able to get a female pregnant. I never kept a male in my home for this very reason. My son has a male yorkie that is neutered and when he comes to visit we have to put a doggie diaper on him or he will mark his territory all over my house. You can purchase them at most pet stores. If you do decide to get one make sure it is for males and not females because they work differently.
