Question
Hi Amy! My family and I are going camping in Yosemite for the first time and we're very excited. We did not find any available spots inside Yosemite NP, so we ended up getting a campsite at Hodgdons Meadows. First of all, we have never been to Yosemite nor its surrounding areas. I was wondering whether Hodgdons is still a good spot for sight seeing and other outdoor activies such as hiking and fishing, is there a creek or river nearby? I'm aware that Yosemite NP is actually 25 miles from here, and I am almost afraid that we do not have anything much to do at our campsite? What would you recommend for Hodgdons Meadows? Also, we are planning on going rafting, I've looked up the rates, and I only found one company (zephyr rafting) that provides half day rafting, it is $110 per person. Are there any other companies that can provide a cheaper and even shorter trip for rafting? I am also open for tubing --as the guy I bought the reservation from says I should check it out. I am not even sure what that is? Is it similar to rafting? Amy, I'd really appreciate any suggestions and tips you can offer! Thank you very much.

Answer
Unfortunately, I have never been to Hodgdons (sp?) Meadows, so can't directly answer your question.  I will tell you that friends camped there and loved it.  You will want to drive into Yosemite Valley no matter what you do, so plan on doing some driving to other areas if you stay there.  The best hiking and sightseeing will not be there.  You might also try Toulumne Meadows or White Wolf in the high country for camping areas with better hiking nearby...but you would still have to drive to see Yosemite Valley.

I think that rafting will be a little iffy because of the lack of rain the last couple of months.  Tubing means you float down the river in an inner tube...its fun, but no white water...so you go slow.  A great thing to do IN Yosemite Valley; a great way to see it.  About 20 per person, no reservation needed.

Hope this helps.
