About Elroy Sanford
Expertise
Questions regarding group and solo albums and his music career from his time in Winnipeg are my strongest area of expertise, followed by general questions about himself and his family. I have absolutely no connections to Mr. Young or any of his friends or family, though, so "insider" questions probably cannot be answered.

Experience
Over the last few years, I have acquired every album by Mr. Young (only missing a few single sides), have bought numerous biographies and have learned as much as I can about Mr. Young.

Education/Credentials
B. A. in Political Science and History, August 2004.
Briefly studied at the Master's level, 2005-2006.
Over 1,250 albums.

Question
Dear Bill,

Mr. Soul has always been a favorite of mine.  I recall listening to it a lot when I was 'young'  (lol) and there was ONE time I heard a studio recording with a pop beat.  I haven't heard it since, as all the rock and oldies stations play the Buffalo Springfield version.  The nearest to it I have found was 'unplugged', but the one I'm looking for starts off with a whisk beat on a snare (I think).

What album was the pop version on?

Answer
Mike,

I'm not 100% certain, but I do know that a version of "Mr. Soul" was released on Trans, his debut for Geffen Records and perhaps the hardest to find of the albums that have been officially released on compact disc. The song was radically different, almost certainly pop and almost certainly one of several reasons why David Geffen ended up suing him a few years later.

The tour for Trans, chronicled on the video release "Neil Young in Berlin", reunited Young with Buffalo Springfield bassist extraordinaire Bruce Palmer.

I'm pretty sure that the Trans version is the one you're looking for and it's one that I'm certain you'll never hear on any radio station.
