Question Hi,
I read this quote from Neil, talking about Brian Wilson: "His music definitely affected mine - the harmonies. Of course I never played in a band that could sing like that. He's got the whole band retarding every once in awhile - he's got a feel for it and he's got everybody playing and it's not something you naturally do. It's something that he shows you where to lay back - where to slow down. You hear the band doing it just like it happens on the record - it's no accident. I love you, Brian. I'm there for you."
In regard to him saying that Brian's harmonies have affected his music, I was wondering if you can think of any particular songs where that might be true. Do you know if he's mentioned this in any other interviews, or can you think of anything based on your own opinion?
Thanks!
Answer Dear Sara,
Wilson and Young were (and are) labelmates (Reprise)and contemporaries and both liked to push the envelope when it came to creating good original music. And of course, both were members of bands that had their fair share of dissent and disharmony (Wilson with the Beach Boys, especially after "Pet Sounds"; Young with Buffalo Springfield, CSNY and even Crazy Horse at various points in time, especially in 1970 and 1986)
"Long May You Run" from the Stills-Young Band 1976 album is an obvious choice since Young mentions both The Beach Boys and Caroline No in the last verse. But the harmonizing is solid on the chorus. "Midnight on the Bay" from the same record has the same effect for me."Winterlong" from the 1977 retrospective "DECADE" is drenched in harmony and in the style of the best Beach Boys songs. "Burned" and "On the Road Home" from the Buffalo Springfield days could have been strong singles for the Beach Boys. That's all I can think of right now, but when I think of some more, I'll let you know.
