Question
QUESTION: Hey Exo,

I dont't play tournaments for 2-3 Years. Now i want you to improve my old Deck.

Perhaps you can tell me, if this Deck actually is competitive and which changes I schould do because of new cards and which I have to do because of the new banned list.

Thank you,

Robin

ANSWER: Sure, if you provide me with the Deck List them I'm quite happy to help you out.

I suspect that what you were playing before will need heavy changes to keep up nowadays though, things have changed a lot in the last few years.

Drop me a follow-up Question containing your Decklist, I'll see what I can do.

Answer
Old Format Quickdraw Plants... I do quite like this deck...
The major impact that you're going to have to cope with is the addition of Xyz monsters, which have turned the game on its head...

Let's go through the Ban-List Changes that are relevant here:

Brain Control -> 0
Brionac -> 0
Black Luster Soldier - Envoy of the Beginning -> 1
Dandylion -> 1
Lonefire Blossom -> 1
Book of Moon -> 1
Pot of Avarice -> 1
Dark Hole -> 1
Torrential Tribute -> 2
Card Trooper -> 2
Call of the Hanted -> 3
Mystical Space Typhoon -> 3

Of course, the release of cards like Solemn Warning, Maxx "C" and Scrap Dragon have also had massive effects on how this deck runs.

With 1 Dandylion, Quickdraw is inconsistent at best, and the banning of Glow-Up Bulb and Limitation of Formula Synchron mean that we're best off dropping the Quickdraw section in its entirity and using plants more as a Support engine than as our Primary Synchro  condition.

The format has shifted in favour of massive power plays and aggressive combos, so Tragoedia is a must in a deck that con maintain hand Prescence as easily as this one.

We maintain the Basics of the Deck:

1 Caius the Shadow Monarch
2 Card Trooper
2 Ryko, Lightsworn Hunter
2 Debris Dragon
1 Dandylion
1 Spore
1 Lonefire Blossom
1 Sangan
(11)

But we add to it a new support Framework that allows it to surive in a faster format based around Xyz summoning:

2 Tour Guide from the Underworld
2 Thunder King Rai-Oh
2 Maxx "C"
2 Tragoedia
1 Black Luster Soldier - Envoy of the Beginning
(9)

Xyz are inherent special summons that can be negated by Thunder King, while Maxx "C" will force your opponent to stop their power play or risk you drawing multiple cards (and then dropping a huge Tragoedia).
Luster Soldier provides a huge Boss monster that can single-handedly swing games, while Tour Guide will allow you to Special summon either Sangan or another copy of itself from the deck, either turning on your search egnine or allowing you to perform an Xyz summon at will.

Finally, I'll add in a single copy of Blackwing, Zephyros the Elite, while will help out with your Synchro plays while allowign you to re-use cards like Tragoedia and Call of the Haunted.

Your Spell line only changes to accommodate the new norm:

3 Mystical Space Typhoon
1 Scapegoat
1 Heavy Storm
1 Monster Reborn
1 Dark Hole
1 Book of Moon
1 Pot of Avarice
1 Foolish Burial
(10)

You can also choose to include Enemy Controller if you need more Creature Removal.
Scapegoat might also help with Synchro plays.
One for One can also set up big plays when used in conjunction with Dandylion.

Traps change the most heavily:

2 Solemn Warning
2 Torrential Tribute
2 Call of the Haunted
2 Bottomless Trap Hole
1 Solemn Judgment
(9)

Warning is new from The Duellist Revolution, and immediately became a permanent addition to the Standard Trap line.
Othewise I've been upping cards on which the limitations have been relaxed, and cutting things that are no longer needed thanks to other changes (Dust Tornado with 3 MST for example)

So the Final deck looks like this:

2 Tragoedia
1 Black Luster Soldier - Envoy of the Beginning
1 Caius the Shadow Monarch
2 Card Trooper
2 Ryko, Lightsworn Hunter
2 Debris Dragon
2 Tour Guide from the Underworld
2 Thunder King Rai-Oh
2 Maxx "C"
1 Dandylion
1 Spore
1 Lonefire Blossom
1 Sangan
1 Blackwing - Zephyros the Elite
(21)

3 Mystical Space Typhoon
1 Mind Control
1 Heavy Storm
1 Monster Reborn
1 Dark Hole
1 Book of Moon
1 Pot of Avarice
1 Foolish Burial
(10)

2 Solemn Warning
2 Torrential Tribute
2 Call of the Haunted
2 Bottomless Trap Hole
1 Solemn Judgment
(9)

For 40 cards total.
Your Extra Deck should look like this (You may need to look up what soem of these do):

1 Formula Synchron
1 Armory Arm
1 T.G. Hyper Librarian
1 Ally of Justice Catastor
1 Orient Dragon
1 Gaia Knight - the Force of Earth
1 Black Rose Dragon
1 Ancient Fairy Dragon
1 Stardust Dragon
1 Scrap Dragon
1 Wind-Up Zenmaines
1 Leviair the Sea Dragon
1 Number 17 - Leviathan Dragon
1 Maestroke the Symphony Djinn
1 Number 39 - Utopia
(15)

Your side deck will have the be suited to your own metagame, but I'd look at something like this:

1 Chimeratech Fortress Dragon
2 Cyber Dragon
2 Effect Veiler
1 Thunder King Rai-Oh
1 Ryko, Lightsworn Hunter/Night Assailant
2 Soul Taker
2 Dust Tornado
2 Fiendish Chain
2 Shadow Imprisoning Mirror
(15)

Give that a go, see what you think.

I'm able to answer any and all questions related to the English Yu-Gi-Oh! game itself. This includes, but isn't limited to:

Deck Fixes: Either making suggestions and improvements on a deck you've already built, or building a deck from scratch for you. In either case, please give an idea of the kind of deck you're building, the level of play you're planning to use it in (small tournaments, regionals etc), and the kind of budget you're on.
Please format decks in a way that's easy to read. Each card name should be on its own line, with a number before it indicating how many you're playing. Please split decks into Monsters, Spells and Traps.

NOTE: A level of reasonability is assumed with this. I cannot build you a nationals winning deck based on monsters whose name starts with the Letter 'A' on a budget of 4($6)... Nor will I generally respond well to Questions touting "No Xyz, Synchro... etc" or disallowing cards from certain parts of the show. I haven't seen the show in a number of years and find these conditions to usually be poorly-defined.

Rulings: On any card interacting with any other card(s). Tell me the scenario, and I'll tell you what happens.

I won't be answering questions on whether a trade is fair or not, or on how much X-card is worth, as both these kinds of question can be answered by using Ebay's completed listings page.
