Question Hi,
I think I asked you a question awhile ago about my boyfriend being deported.
Well he is now in Serbia and it turns out he has an Aunt there, so that is good. But he has no job. He can do anything but says the language barrier makes it difficult. I asked him what a typical day there is like and he just said different. Can you tell me again?
Maybe he does not want me to know?
I am sure he could use money. Is say $25.00 here worth more there?
How would I send it to him already in his currency? Also is there a way to call there and vice versa that is cheaper then the rest? I dread my phone bill, we talked over an hour.
Thanks for your help..
Kathleen
Answer Kathleen,
I hate to say this again but beware of these situations - they can take awful turns. It would be easy for him to get a job if he so desires. People with skills (computers, etc.) are in demand. And as always, if you can speak English, you can find many jobs in business and teaching English. $25 there is a lot. In Russia even, the average MONTHLY wage is about $50 US for professions like contractors, bakers, teachers, basic physicians, etc. It is tough to send money there. NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER send cash - trust me - it will not get there. Also, do not send envelopes that cannot be seen through (like the airmail ones are OK) because if they suspect it is a card or gift it will be opened. Money and fancy gifts rarely arrive. Do not bother insuring packages with the USPS because it ia extremely expensive and the paperwork that the receiver has to fill out in the foreign country is impossible. American Express Travellers Checques work but trying to get them snuck in are a problem. If he has a bank account, that is the best way - wire transfer. But from experience I will tell you NEVER send money or anything to a man that hints or asks for it. I do not care what is the case. I thought "oh that is not my case" before and you know what? I got burned even after a long and close relationship. If you want to help, don't send money but send things that are hard to obtain there. If that is what he wants - a little boost, he will appreciate the effort not just some dough. About the phone bill. Check around different carriers and ask about INTL calling plans and also make sure Yugoslavia is covered. Some have great deals but they vary region by region. I know someone who is able to call Russia from NYC for 10 cents/min. So check on an intl plan - don't use regular long distance or you will get a shock! I hope that helps.
