Question Dear Jack
We are thinking of visiting Victoria Falls for a week. We would like to do some day safari trips and to visit Lake Kariba. How far away is Lake Kariba and what is the best way to get there? Can you suggest other things to see and do in Victoria Falls?
Thank you for your assistance
Jane.
Answer Hello Jane,
There are several game lodges in the area around Victoria Falls. The falls themselves are worth a day or two at most. However, there is good game viewing in the area.
Lake Kariba is probably most accessable by air from Victoria Falls. You might consider Bumi Hills Lodge. It is expensive. Also, right next door (in "Bush" terms)is Katete Lodge. The game drives in both places are wonderful.
If you only have a week, you might consider Hwange National Park. Deep inside the park, Makalolo Plains Camp is a luxury tented camp with unforgettable game viewing. It is closer to Victoria Falls than Kariba.
Also, you should know that the political situation is unstable in Zimbabwe right now. Check with your travel company to see what is available and safe. Check the U.S. Department of State's travel advisories at http://travel.state.gov/travel_warnings.html for information about the situation there.
If you go to Zimbabwe, I would appreciate an email letting me know about your experiences. Email at jacknels@aol.com
