Question
QUESTION: hi we are a family of six four boys 6-12visiting in july for 3 days we were hoping to check out zion and have at least 1 day to go to the north rim. we are staying at the cliffrose. how close is this to the park? any suggestions would help thanks......fran

ANSWER: I can't answer this question fully because I have no idea what/where cliffrose is.  Is it a hotel?  If its one of the ones just outside Zion Park, it is two miles from the park...but again, I don't know.

Your boys would enjoy hiking a short way up the Zion narrows.  Prepare to get wet...and don't go if thunderstorms threaten.

QUESTION: hi again yes the cliffrose is a hotel just outside the park.  we are looking forward to the narrows hike, what kind of footwear would be best? could you get by in sandles

Answer
Ok, then cliffrose is very close (just a mile or two) from the park entrance.  Parts of the park (including the start of the narrows hike) can only be accessed using a shuttle.  (you catch it at the visitors center).  North Rim is about a 2.5 hour drive from there.  You could get by with sandles, but flipflops tend to get caught on things.  Water sandles are great if you have them.  There are a lot of walking sticks you can "borrow" at the start of the hike; I recommend that.

Also the hike to the Emerald Pools is a nice one for kids.
